The best area to stay in Hidalgo, Quintana Roo, Mexico, is the town of Tulum, specifically along the beachfront or in the town centre.

The beachfront area of Tulum offers direct access to the Caribbean Sea and is characterised by a stretch of luxury eco-resorts and boutique hotels. This area, often referred to as the "Hotel Zone," runs along the coastline, with many properties offering private beach access, high-end wellness facilities, and gourmet dining experiences. The Coba Road, which connects the town to the archaeological site, also leads to this beachfront stretch.

Couples seeking a tranquil and luxurious retreat will find the beachfront ideal. It provides a relaxed setting with opportunities for seaside dining, spa treatments, and enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline. Many hotels here offer secluded settings, superb for a romantic getaway.

For travellers who prefer to be closer to local life and a wider range of dining and shopping options, the town centre (Tulum Pueblo) is a great choice. This area is more bustling, with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops lining its main avenues, such as Avenida Tulum. It's also a convenient hub for arranging excursions to nearby cenotes and the Tulum ruins.

Solo travellers often appreciate the town centre for its convenience and accessibility. It's easy to meet other travellers, explore local eateries, and has good transport links for day trips.

Hidalgo isn't a typical tourist destination like Cancun or Playa del Carmen, as it's an inland state in Central Mexico. Therefore, the best time to visit Hidalgo depends on your preferred activities and tolerance for heat and rain.

For those looking to explore the natural beauty and archaeological sites, the dry season from November to April is ideal. During these months, you'll experience pleasant, warm weather with minimal rainfall, making it great for hiking in the Sierra Gorda mountains, visiting the Tolantongo Caves, or exploring the ancient ruins of Tula. The skies are generally clear, offering excellent conditions for photography and outdoor excursions.

If you're interested in the lush, green landscapes and don't mind occasional afternoon showers, the shoulder seasons of May, June, September, and October can also be appealing. During these months, the vegetation is vibrant, and you might find fewer crowds at popular attractions. However, be prepared for higher humidity and the possibility of heavier rainfall, particularly in the afternoons.

The summer months of July and August are generally the warmest and wettest, with frequent and sometimes intense rainfall. While this can make some outdoor activities challenging, it's also when the natural scenery is at its most verdant.
