"Hard Rock Cancun (Fri–Mon birthday weekend). I expected a 4–5 star experience, but it fell short—overall 2/5, saved by exceptional service staff. Check-in felt like an assembly line: one counter to check in, then another line for keys, then additional lines/desks for add-ons. Counter staff were adequate, but not helpful when problems came up. Expedia VIP benefit (20% off spa once per stay) is not automatic—it wasn’t in their system for our room unless I explicitly stated it when scheduling. I booked an additional longer massage and still didn’t get the discount because I assumed they could see VIP status. Birthday package (cake, door banner, beach cabana, couples massage, sparkling wine) required multiple desks to schedule. The banner was supposed to be up Saturday (key part of the surprise) and cake/wine at 5pm—no banner and cake/wine arrived ~6pm only after I went to concierge. I was told they’d investigate and contact me—no follow-up. Sunday: tried to upgrade to a poolside cabana, got sent desk-to-desk and was told “not 24 hours in advance,” so we had to buy a poolside cabana on top of the beach one (other pool cabanas sat open all day). Complaints required repeating the full story to multiple desks, ending with “sorry.” Room was clean but smelled like mildew. Lighting is terrible for makeup (overhead shadows; makeup mirror blocked by faucet). Minor: only Modelo on tap + limited Corona Light. Shoutout to Beto, Gustav, and Jhonas—they were outstanding."
