This district is ideal for easy access to many of Lisbon's key sights and excellent transport links.

Couples often find Baixa a great base. Its central location means you're just a short stroll from the vibrant Rossio Square, the elegant shops of Rua Augusta, and the Santa Justa Lift, offering panoramic views. Evenings can be spent enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants or catching a Fado show nearby.

For solo travellers, Baixa offers a convenient and bustling environment. With excellent metro and tram connections from Rossio and Praça do Comércio, exploring other parts of the city is straightforward.

The best time to visit Santa Maria Maior is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are thinner.

During these months, you'll experience comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 18°C to 25°C, which is ideal for exploring the historic streets and hills of Santa Maria Maior on foot. You'll find it easier to secure reservations at popular restaurants and attractions, and the overall experience will feel more relaxed.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will particularly enjoy the spring and autumn. The city's light is beautiful during these times, great for evening strolls through Alfama or along the Tagus River. Many outdoor terraces are open, offering a lovely setting for a drink or meal.

Families travelling with children will also find these seasons more manageable. The milder weather means less risk of children becoming overheated or tired from walking in the peak summer sun.
