If the big, all-inclusive hotels are too touristy for you, this could be a great choice. We felt very safe here, the hotel is on a private road with a guard shack so limited traffic and easy to walk along daily. There's a beautiful cenote just a few minutes walk away. Keep in mind, being outside the main hotel zone food options are limited to a few hotels unless you have a car to drive into town or to the hotel zone - so we recommend renting a car or scooter. We would also highly recommend finding the Mexican cooking from scratch class in a private Tulum home - it was a great experience. Special thank you to all the staff at the La Caretta, for some reason I cannot leave their names per Expedia... but the entire staff was so great. Wonderful, loving staff, took very good care of us. The ladies at the Royal check in, I failed to get their names, but I hope they are recognized as they made the check in so smooth and so sweet. Now about the resort. This resort was fabulous. the accommodations were fabulous, all the food was really good, Pools and beach is outstanding. Wish the Mexican food was more authentic, but the staff, wonderful. Seafood restaurant was good as was the Mediterranean. We just had a wonderful time and high recommend this resort. They understood our son is older (12) and made sure there were age appropriate things for him to do for fun. Each building has a personal butler and concierge who offered to plan an itinerary for us every day based on how we felt. There are so many activities including, we were always finding new things to do every day. The room was perfect: spacious and well designed so we could all get ready and have privacy when we needed it. We found the whole property spotless and the service amazing. The check in process was one of the best check in experiences we’ve ever had. There was a lounge my son could get snacks and drinks and play Xbox while we handled check-in. The staff as so accommodating and go out of their way to get you everything you want. We never found an issue getting a lounger near the pool or in a prime spot on the beach. We never waited along for anything. My son played soccer at the sports Center each night before dinner, and they would send a golf cart to pick him up and take him to the game. One evening he wanted to stay in after having too much sun, and they sent him room service with all his favourite foods. The wifi is excellent if you need it. We’d definitely come back! (1,099 reviews) Unfortunately, there were several recurring issues that significantly impacted the quality of my stay. Throughout my stay, the resort frequently ran out of basic bar supplies. Beer was unavailable for three days, and on one day there was no Kahlúa or mint available for mojitos. In addition, the bar ran out of clean glasses, and guests were asked to walk around the pool collecting used glasses so they could be washed and reused. The food quality was also disappointing. Every day there were eggshells in my scrambled eggs, and I have photos documenting this. None of the buffet food was served hot; everything was lukewarm to cold, even when arriving right when the buffet opened. While the food at the pool area was better, the service was extremely slow, and I often saw plates of food sitting for long periods before being delivered to guests. There were also maintenance and comfort issues. On a couple of days the pool water level was low, and visible buildup and debris were noticeable along one side. At one point the ping pong table was painted while guests were sitting nearby, and the fumes were overwhelming. One morning there was no coffee available at all. The special dinner lasagna was particularly poor; the sauce tasted like plain tomato soup and was not appetizing. Additionally, many of the mixed drinks had a very unpleasant rubber-like taste, making them undrinkable. Staff was great and the grounds are nice. Pool best! Will stay there again but not all inclusive!
