We had such a phenomenal stay at Fu-Sha Cottage. The owner Yoshiko is the real magic of this place; she went truly above and beyond and made our stay one of the best we had in Japan. She was communicative, helpful, and fun to be around. Her English wasn't perfect, but she really put in an earnest effort and we were able to communicate without too much of a problem. Great hotel! Beautiful view from the room! It is a bit of a walk from Nikko which can be lovely after eating way too much food for dinner. Taxis are fairly inexpensive back-and-forth.
When I stayed, there was a food truck that showed up for breakfast and dinner options, this was fantastic! The quality of the food was really high.
I didn’t try any of the food from the little store that they have on site, but the pizza did smell good.
The laundry machines were always busy, so that’s something to...

Great space, price, and staff. Area is amazing and views are stunning. One caveat will be the beds. I think the hotel should upgrade the beds because it was not so comfortable to sleep in

Private onsen are amazing - looking over Kinugawa river and mountains (some construction in the view near by but not loud). Public onsen beautiful and zen - some outdoor, some indoor. Food was good - kaisaeki type meals served in dining area.

When is the best time to go to Nikko?
The best time to go to Nikko is during autumn, from late September to mid-November, for its stunning foliage, or in spring, from April to May, for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
Autumn is particularly popular when the maple and other deciduous trees around the shrines and temples, as well as along the Iroha-zaka winding road, transform into brilliant reds and golds. This period offers incredible photographic opportunities and a beautiful backdrop for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage sites. However, it's also the busiest time, so booking accommodation and transport well in advance is essential.
Spring offers milder temperatures and the chance to see cherry blossoms if you time your visit for late April. The weather is generally comfortable for walking and sightseeing, and the sites are typically less crowded than in autumn. This makes it an ideal time for those who prefer a more relaxed pace while still enjoying good weather.
For those looking to avoid crowds entirely, the winter months (December to March) offer a great experience with snow-covered landscapes, though some attractions might have reduced hours or be less accessible.
