At the time of writing, this hotel has a 9.2 on Expedia. That is truly absurd. This hotel is old (they don’t call it “historic” for nothing) and run down (featuring peeling wallpaper, a saggy matress, threadbare carpet and a kitchen that looks like it was built in the 80s). Making things worse, there is literally not a single thing of interest in Kumara (it only exists because it is a stop on the West Coast Wilderness Trail). We think there was only one other occupant so it was not noisy. We did enjoy the community stove on a cold night while playing cards in the living room. The bed and bathroom were small but comfortable. There was mold on the bedroom curtain sheers. There was some difficulty in checking in because it was at the pub across the road. The room could be better heated ànd the addition of an electric blanket would-be good but maybe kiwis don't feel the cold. Old fashioned fixtures and furniture - exactly as you'd expect in a Historic Cottage including old style teacups. Had walk-in robe and good size ensuite - TV to share in lounge and full cooking facilites including stove, microwave and full-size share refridgerator. We took the time and sat on the veranda. The vacant lot next door holds multiple information signs on Kumara, the area, its pioneers (all sorts). Was so comfortable, loads of hot water, great kitchen with free laundry facilities. The town itself is worth investigating for any history buff. I was totally amazed as to what was on offer for my 55 dollar a night stay. The cottage was a lot bigger then expected with updated bathroom facilities plus laundry.
