The vacant lot next door holds multiple information signs on Kumara, the area, its pioneers (all sorts). That is truly absurd. This hotel is old (they don’t call it “historic” for nothing) and run down (featuring peeling wallpaper, a saggy matress, threadbare carpet and a kitchen that looks like it was built in the 80s). Making things worse, there is literally not a single thing of interest in Kumara (it only exists because it is a stop on the West Coast Wilderness Trail). There was some difficulty in checking in because it was at the pub across the road. We were in one of several rentable rooms in a cottage we thought we had all to ourselves (read hotel.com descriptions closely!). We had our own bathroom but the living room and kitchen were shared. We think there was only one other occupant so it was not noisy. We did enjoy the community stove on a cold night while playing cards in the living room. The bed and bathroom were small but comfortable. There was mold on the bedroom curtain sheers. The cottage was a lot bigger then expected with updated bathroom facilities plus laundry.
