Haiti is the western portion of the island of Hispaniola, next to the Dominican Republic. After decades of repressive rule by the Duvaliers and destruction by the 2010 earthquake, tourism is once again attractive. Come to Haiti, not just another Caribbean beach spot.
Haiti’s unique culture and history are an interesting mix of French, African, Spanish and Taíno, reflected in the country’s art, architecture and music. See examples of this in the capital Port-au-Prince at the Musée du Panthéon National. This subterranean structure resembles the underground homes of the Taínos. Learn about Haiti’s history of slavery and emancipation and see the large anchor from Columbus’ Santa María, which went aground near Haiti in 1492. The Musée Colonial Ogier-Fombrun provides additional colonial history in a restored sugar mill.
UNESCO has recognized Haiti’s national historic park as a heritage site. This includes the Palace of Sans Souci, Ramiers buildings and the Citadelle Laferrière. Tour Sans Souci to see where the one-time slave Henri Christophe lived after becoming president and then king of Haiti. Climb the hill behind the palace to the incredible citadel where Christophe prepared to withstand an extended French attack, which never occurred. Marvel at thousands of cannonballs stockpiled for the more than 300 cannons once installed in the fortress. Many guns still remain. Look down on the smaller forts of Ramiers.
Haiti has numerous natural attractions. Join a tour to trek in the lush mountainous interior. In the south, hike to the waterfalls and blue pools of Bassin Bleu near Jacmel. Enjoy the nearby beaches of Ti Mouillage and Raymond les Bains or the cruise ship stop at Labadie and other beaches near Cap-Haitien in the north.
Reach Haiti by flying to Port-au-Prince or Cap-Haitien airport and renting a car for your travels around the country. Be aware that the U.S. State Department has provided several advisories for citizens traveling to Haiti related to crime, emergency medical treatment availability and civil unrest. Use appropriate caution while enjoying your travels.
