Costa Rica

Journey to this wildlife-packed nation where gushing waterfalls abound, palm trees line the streets and the locals are happy to say hello.

With miles of sandy beaches and acres of rainforests, Costa Rica is a justifiably popular destination. Kayak through calm waters while marveling at towering volcanos, enjoy surfing on the southern coast and visit wildlife rescue centers that help reintroduce injured animals to the wild.

Costa Rica was inhabited by indigenous tribes until the Spanish began colonizing in 1524. Today, it is known as an environmentally progressive nation with a rapidly growing economy. Tourism is also important to Costa Rica, so expect to be hospitably welcomed and looked after by the locals.

Stick to the shorelines for a coastal adventure and stunning natural views. Go on a turtle-watching tour to see if you can spot turtles hatching and heading back to the sea. Hike over the rocky terrain at the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio and discover dense forests filled with lazy sloths and noisy monkeys.

Head to the center of the country to visit San José, a bustling urban city with modern art galleries and popular dance clubs. Don’t miss the Museo de Oro Precolombino y Numismática, two museums displaying an impressive collection of pre-Columbian gold, historic Costa Rican currency and more.

In the Zona Norte in north Costa Rica lies the active Arenal Volcano and several geothermally heated hot springs. Take a tour of the rainforests of the Sarapiqui region and be alert to see the endangered great green macaw.

International fights arrive into San José’s airports. From there, hop on a bus to your destination of choice. For a more reliable schedule, rent a car from most major towns and plan your own routes around the country. For some remote destinations, a four-wheel drive will be essential. There are also passenger ferries for visitors spending time on the coast or wanting to feel the ocean breeze in their hair.

Costa Rica is an enchanting destination filled with picturesque landscapes, varied flora and fauna and a rich culture. It’s no wonder that tourists from around the world choose to visit time and time again.
