G&V Royal Mile Hotel Edinburgh

1 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh - Map
"In a happening part of town."
From the pictures on the Expedia and hotel sites, I thought I was getting a modern room with lots of light. Unfortunately, instead of the room I expected, I got an extremely funky room (in an adjoining building, down several steps from the elevator served floor) with a dark painted (peeling) beam ceiling, a throw back kind of "chaise longue", tiny bedside tables, and an armoire which was small. There was a working desk and a cute old desk which I used to store my folded items. The bathroom was quite modern. The light level was only decent during the sunny hours. At dusk and at night, there was not enough light to read. I asked for another light and received a floor lamp with a 40 watt bulb. The sconces were equally dim, having colored glass shades. There was no safe in the room, and I had to hand over valuables to the front desk to put into their general locked area. There was no receipt offered until I asked for one. The staff were mostly helpful. Leave some extra time if you need a cab as they have to call one for you, though it was fairly quick. The room had normal single glazed windows which did not block the street sounds, esp. the bag piper (bad) who played continuously till 7 pm. The room had no air-conditioning, and because of street noise, an open window was not an option until about midnight.

"Be wowed!!"
I stayed in this hotel already this year and was really impressed on that occasion. This time I was bowled over!! As always, staff at all levels of responsibility were extremely attentive and the breakfast set you up for the day. However, it was the room I was allotted that had the WOW! factor. However much it costs ask for a room overlooking the Royal Mile. You will not be in any way disappointed.

"Great place to stay while in Edinburgh "
Fraser Suites is a great place to stay. It is right off the Royal Mile convenient to shopping, eating, and all the wonderful things to see in the city. The rooms are very nice (note: no A/C) luckily I was traveling in September so it was cool outside and I could open the windows. The rooms have a hair dryer and kitchenette which was great. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

The Scotsman Hotel

"Great Scot"
We stayed at the Scotsman for a week in Edinburgh for a combination of studies and leisure. The location is superb, next to the Royal Mile and close to Princes Street. I could easily walk to the university and national archives. We were upgraded to a publisher's suite, which was large and well suited for our long stay. The staff, including Nick the concierge, were welcoming, friendly and helpful. We enjoyed dinner twice in the Northbridge Brasserie which is in the magnificent refurbished lobby. The menu was a nice modern approach with locally sourced product. The Scotsman was a perfect choice for our stay in Edinburgh.

"Nice hotel. Centrally located to all things. "
It was great to receive a room upgrade with view of the castle. Thank you. However, window was kept open for circulation, exposed us to lots of noise from the street, well into the night. Bathroom has limited hanging bar or shelf for change of clothes.
