"disappointing start but "
AC wasn't working properly resulting in a very uncomfortable first night. We reported it but nothing was done until the next day when it was corrected. They offered another suite after the repair was made to compensate for the first night . Instead we asked for and accepted the breakfast buffet for the next 2 mornings as compensation.

"Hotel feet away from beach."
I've made two visits in past 11 months one in May to celebrate mother's day and second visit was my honeymoon. The staff very friendly and helpful Juan Martinez great person he made restaurant reservations and made our honeymoon even more special. Our room was always clean and even decorated with rose petals after romantic dinner. My husband and I had fantastic time we enjoyed food and bars. We spent evenings in pool and took short walks to beach.

"One in a new and fun line of boutique hotels."
Mexico is now bringing on line a lot of boutique hotels fashioned out of old colonial properties. This one has a tremendous view, great restaurant and good staff. It is away from the main tourist beaches but near malecon with great seafood and bars close by.

"Not a bad little hotel that won't break the bank."
My room was very clean and in good condition however I did see quite a few tiny little ants on the balcony which seemed to be coming from the adjacent suite. Some things could use updating or touching up. The bathroom fixtures looked pretty antiquated. I booked an executive ocean view suite. The room itself was pretty basic. An executive suite at this inn means on the top floor (5th-"pijo ejecutivo") having the best view of the ocean or if you prefer a view of the laguna which I wouldn't recommend because it isn't that nice too look at. One advantage on that side is you can sit on your balcony during the day in the shade instead of being fried by the sun lol. Very nice view of the Malecon and ocean though it is obstructed a little viewing north by an unsightly building/hotel right next door. It looks like they are sprucing it up a little. A previous guest's review mentioned the prohibition on outside food and beverages. This is not Olas Altas' policy. It's a dept. of health regulation so it is in place at all resorts and hotels with I assume an adjoining restaurant. Never encountered any rules like that before in the US or Canada and it is a bit of an annoyance if you want snacks or drinks after room service closed. Check in/out was a breeze. No surprises and they summoned a cab to take me to the airport which was there immediately. Bit of a language barrier but not bad. I think I was the only non-Mexican national there at the time so maybe they assumed I spoke Spanish.

I regret not staying at the Palms the whole 67 days. I stayed at costa de oro that is down the street. Costa de oro was the worst hotel ever. I waisted my money on that hotel. But glad I stayed one night at the palms .

"Fair to middling"
I have been to Maz. 8 times. In mid malecon, it is a long way to anything but the beach across the street. Taxis, busses and pulmanias are plentiful and necessary. The hotel could have been 4 - 5 if maintained reasonably, but much of it is tired and messy. Halls elevator and stairs were continually messy and littered with sand etc. The pool could be very good if a few pesos were spent on new furniture and even a chair or 2. Room floor looked dirty even if it might not have been. No extra plugs for charging items. No comfortable chair or table. Restaurant is good, esp. for breakfast, although the "included" breakfast is limited. Machines in the gym were basic and the room was hot. Any noises were transmitted through the thin walls. Rowdy bus tours or weekenders are common. Solid 2.5/5

"Sound of crashing waves"
I stayed here 3 times when I was traveling in Mexico recently. It is a big old and on the funky side, but I actually appreciate that over sterile corporate places. It's directly across from a beach, and one of the few hotels that is in this area. Some say they are, but they are across from rocky shoals, not a nice swimmable sand beach. The courtyard inside is lovely, with big old trees and places to sit. There's a small pool, but it's quite charming - the kind you would like in your backyard garden. The third floor ocean view rooms have little balconies where you can sit and watch the waves and surfers, and the people walking the malacon in the evening. It is just blocks from the historical district. The strip along the beach has fun restaurants and bars, but the noise ends quite early. The staff is really friendly and accommodating. I don't think I ever heard the word no. There is a restaurant/bar attached where there is occasional live singing, but, again, it ends early. There is also a small travel agency on site where you can get bus tickets and tours.
