Perched against southwestern Florida's Caloosahatchee River, this old-school resort destination combines world-class beaches with laid-back attractions.
Resort Destination, Meet Historical Landmark
When Thomas Edison and Henry Ford built vacation homes in this semi-tropical region, neither could have predicted that their residences alone would lure thousands of travellers to Fort Myers all inclusive holidays. That is, of course, exactly what happened: Along with the stunning beaches and impeccable weather, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates have provided a compelling reason to sneak away to this Sunshine State gem since the latter half of the 20th century. Come for the sun-drenched shore, but stay for the old Florida history.
Gulf Coast Style Starts Here
Of course, even the city's oldest neighbourhood hasn't remained stuck in the past. Modern Fort Myers is an effortless blend of tucked-away shops and lazy-day cafes; despite its mainland location, the entire area seems to move on island time, and you'll find just as many fisherman strolling the streets as you will fashionistas. What's more, the golf hotels in Fort Myers are seriously tops, so sporting enthusiasts can get on the green surrounded by a lusher-than-lush landscape. This is the essence of Gulf Coast relaxation.
The Subtropical Southwest
There's a reason they call it the Sunshine State. Though Fort Myers hotels don't enjoy quite the same heat as southernmost Miami, the weather here is worthy of its own magazine article. Summers tend to be wetter than winters, but both seasons offer near-perfect temperatures for biking, hiking, and strolling. Plus, visiting during the early winter won't just land you a few cheap deals and discounts; you might also catch a glimpse of the manatees swimming up the Orange River.
Top Things to See and Do
Like any Floridian paradise, the best all inclusive vacation for Fort Myers is primarily focused on the picturesque beaches and warm-weather treasures. Head to Centennial Park for a riverside picnic, browse the historical Burroughs Homes & Gardens, or gaze at the winged beauties at Fowler Street's Butterfly Estates. Sports fans may want to check out the Fort Myers activities that kick up during the Boston Red Sox spring training while relaxation seekers might find some tranquility at the Sanibel Lighthouse. Either way, you'll be in a great position to immerse yourself in the local charm.
