![Although a classic example of Spanish Colonial architecture (thick adobe walls, two bell towers and a six-foot crucifix), the small catholic church of El Santuario de Chimaya is probably best known for its supposedly curative powers of “holy dirt” found in its sacristy. 

The National Historic Landmark, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Chimayo, has been called the “Lourdes of America”, attracting 300,000 pilgrims annually hoping to take home some of the miracle dirt.   

We went home empty handed the day of our visit; a mass was being celebrated at the time of our arrival.   

Follow the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway from Santa Fe to see this site and numerous other authentic historic landmarks.

« Exactement ce qu’on peut espérer en visitant le Nouveau-Mexique . L’entrée se fait super simplement avec réception d’un code. La chambre, comme l’ensemble de la propriété, est décorée avec soin et goût. Le petit déjeuner préparé devant nous, avec des produits de qualité, par des hôtes charmants , intéressants et qui ouvrent l’esprit aux voyages. Le parquet a l’étage peut craquer un peu , peut-être préférer l’étage au cas où quelqu’un serait un peu trop matinal . »

« The check-in was fast and friendly. Place is clean and well maintained. Room was comfortable and hotel is well situated. The sound proofing is the issue. We were on the first floor and when the guest above us arrived, yikes, let the noise begin. We heard every step, we could hear them talk. And when they showered, OMG, the noise from the running water....loud. Thank god they slept fairly early and didn't get up before we got up and were gone. My advice, the price is very good, get a room on the...

« Hôtel situé à l’entrée de Santa Fe en venant dAlbuquerque où nous avons séjourné deux nuits. Établissement tout confort avec une très spacieuse chambre. Personnel disponible et sympathique. Seul point négatif le ménage de notre chambre n’a pas été fait durant notre séjour. La personne au frontdesk nous a expliqué que l’hôtel manquait de personnel et que les chambres occupées étaient faites que tous les 2 ou 3 jours. Pas très sérieux pour un hôtel estampillé HYATT…. »
