![Completed in 1910, the Herndon Home, was the residence of Alonzo Herndon and his family. Herdon was a former slave raised in a sharecropping family after the Civil War. Herndon studied barbering, and owned and managed a string of barbershops in downtown Atlanta after the Civil War, one of which was considered to be the most elegant in the country with marble floors and chandelier. Investing his income into real estate, Herndon became the largest black property owner in Atlanta by 1900. Later, Herndon founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, located in the Sweet Auburn Historic District, and became Atlanta's first black millionaire. The home was primarily designed by Adrienne Herndon, Alonzo's first wife and a teacher at Atlanta University. The couple had one son, Norris. Adrienne died of Addison's disease just three months after the home was completed. In 1912 Alonzo married Jessie Gillespie.

The Herndon home is a two-story, 15-room Beaux Arts mansion built by local black craftsmen. The formally composed building is constructed with multi-colored brick, and features a two-story entry portico supported by Corinthian columns. One-story porches to each side of the building echo this theme in brick piers and wooden capitals. An elliptical fanlight over the main entrance and the balustrade above the full entablature of the building's cornice add a distinctly Georgian Revival flavor to this imposing residence. "Un très agréable séjour dans ce très belle hôtel Excellent accueil lors de notre Check in qui a été effectué bien plus tôt que l’horaire prévu et sans frais supplémentaires. 2 lits queens size, avec 1 frigo. Parking en supplément ($40/jour) un tarif très correct pour la ville sachant que les tarifs des chambres sont parmi les moins élevés de la ville. Hôtel situé à proximité des sites touristiques. "

"La chambre était propre, mais c’était vraiment le minimum… La salle de bain avait des porte-shampoings cassés et le canapé présentait des taches inappropriées à notre arrivée. La porte de la salle de bain ne restait pas fermée et était difficile à maintenir close, d’autant plus qu’il n’y avait aucun moyen de la verrouiller. Le personnel de l’hôtel est sympathique, mais parfois un peu trop insistant. Par exemple, lorsque nous avons demandé un menu des boissons au barman du hall, il nous a répondu sèchement qu’il n’y en avait pas, avant de nous dire, en voyant notre étonnement, qu’ils pouvaient préparer ce que nous voulions. Le personnel est souvent distrait, occupé à discuter entre eux ou sur leur téléphone, plutôt qu’à être disponible pour les clients. L’entretien des chambres manquait de régularité, les horaires de nettoyage variaient entre 8h45 et 16h pour notre chambre au troisième étage, ce qui compliquait notre organisation pour retourner dans la chambre. Pire encore, les agents d’entretien nous ont réveillés en ouvrant la porte avec leur carte magnétique (heureusement que nous avions mis la butée de porte !). Ils avaient aussi l’habitude de crier dans les couloirs pour communiquer entre eux et de mettre la musique à fond dans les chambres qu’ils nettoyaient. Le restaurant du hall était hors de prix et utilisait des sonnettes censées avertir quand la commande était prête… mais elles ne fonctionnaient jamais. Le personnel nous disait : « Quand votre plat sera prê"
