"As a North American traveler, you need to make sure you select a western room that has a shower. Some of the rooms do not have a shower and you need to use the baths. This is a problem if you have a morning flight as the bath not open early enough. It is also a problem if you think you can shower in your own room."

"If you are a non-smoker, do yourself a favour and skip this place. The hotel uses central air conditioning and the rooms on the non-smoking floor (level 7) smell musky with a stale cigarette stench. We had 3 rooms in my group and all the rooms were the same even when we changed rooms. In addition, most of the service staff were non-Japanese, they could not communicate well and did not appear to be well trained and quite rude. "Excellent hotel. Stayed here for 2 nights and it was an excellent choice. We had a nice hike after a big breakfast followed by onsen in the afternoon. Hotel was perfectly situated. "

"We had a wonderful room at Hotel Cocoa - it was really spacious and had an incredible view overlooking Lake Toya. Although the hotel was having some renovation work done, this didn't affect us in any way and the stay was peaceful and quiet. It was fantastic to wake up and be able to see the whole of the lake - it was an instant weather forecast! There was a jacuzzi bath in the room too which was lovely after a day sightseeing. There is not a daily cleaning service but you do get clean towels every day and can ask for anything else that you need. Parking was right outside the hotel entrance. The location is fantastic but you do need a car to really benefit from staying here as it is a ten minute drive into town."
