Owner was very friendly and helpful.
Great location - especially if you're into mountain biking.
The Waverly Bar and Restaurant down the street is excellent.
The town is a former coal town with a number of quaint shops, a work in progress.
Bathrooms are shared.
The common room and kitchen are excellent.
Such a unique experience! This is NOT your typical hostel. The place oozes charm and comfort. The common areas are spacious and welcoming. The bathrooms are clean. The sleeping spaces are simple without sacrificing comfort and privacy. On my return I will stay longer.
Want to stay in a beautiful spot with an amazing kitchen and common area to cook and hang out in? Want bike storage, great staff and a comfy bed? Look no further! Our fav place to stay in Cumberland!

We really enjoyed our stay. Didn’t realize it was a hostel when I booked it but enjoyed it despite having shared bathrooms. Very friendly vibe
The Riding fool was perfect for our little family! Comfy beds, very clean facilities, great smelling towels and soaps in the washrooms, excellent common room with games and pool table, great place to meet people…and a place to store and fix our bikes to to it off! Common kitchen area with everything. And in central Cumberland where we could walk to everything. We will definitely be back! But for longer:) Thank you so much!!
Jen helped me with my bags and took the time to talk. A lovely woman. She’s so welcoming. The room and bathroom were as spotless as always. The bed and pillows are always so comfortable and the location is right in town so you can walk everywhere. The lake is a short drive as well as hiking trails. I love the old hardwood floors , and comfy furnishings in the common areas. The kitchen is so spacious and has 2 stoves , big fridge and anything you need from Brita coffee makers to plates cups and cutlery annd cookware. And there is nice clean plush white towels. I’ve never been able to find anything negative about this hostel. It’s a lovely experience staying here and I always look forward to my stay. Thanks to the people who run it I’ve always returned.
We enjoy.d the old building which is clean and comfortable. However, we had a double bed up against the wall which made it difficult to get up in the night. We would like to book a queen bed if that is possible as my husband is a big man, another time. Thanks Althea
Sadly it was not quiet when I stayed here. The hostel was full and many people trickled in on. A Friday night between 10pm- 12am. Lots of loud talking in front of the rooms and talking down the hallways to others who in the common room. Noisy people in the common room.
I wouldn’t recommend Room#1 - it’s right beside the common rooms and kitchen and you hat everything. Beds are on the harder sister.
Based on other accommodations in the area, not sure the cost justified the experience. Cleanliness was excellent and its a cute place - just not great for a single person I guess.
Super quaint, private, quiet and comfortable for a hostel. The common area was incredibly relaxing in the evening, like being at home. I’d stay here again, for sure.
Very unique and interesting property. Clean, comfortable, well equipped for relaxing, cooking your own meals, and enjoying Cumberland. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
