The 2.5-mile (four-kilometer) track has seen some of the most spectacular races in history since its construction in 1909. In July, drivers battle it out in the NASCAR Brickyard 400, while each August the city is flooded with motor cycling fans who come to experience the Red Bull Motorbike GP. Each event is preceded by a series of practice and qualification days leading up to race day that add to the anticipation and excitement.
There’s plenty to see at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway outside of the racing events. If you are coming for one of the main events, there are large areas dedicated to camping and RVs , and a number of nearby hotels to suit all budgets. During race season, the speedway operates a convenient shuttle service from downtown.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway is approximately six miles (9.5 kilometers) from the center of the city, in the appropriately named suburb of Speedway.
