The Prince of Wales Theatre opened in 1884 as a modest theater with a capacity of 1,000 audience members. Its earliest hit production was the comic opera Dorothy starring Marie Tempest. It went on to become one of longest-running shows of the era. In 1937, actress Gracie Fields laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the present art deco-style building.

From the mid-20th century, the theater became a stage for popular musicals. In the late 1990s it was a venue for Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, West Side Story and Rent, the latter a tale of a group of penniless actors living in New York’s East Village. Shows that graced the stage in the early-2000s include The Witches of Eastwick and Cliff – The Musical, a musical biopic of British singer Sir Cliff Richard. Mamma Mia!, based on the life of Swedish pop band Abba, ran for almost a decade.

Since 2013, the theater has hosted the multiple Tony award-winning satirical comedy The Book of Mormon. It follows the adventures of Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda in an attempt to convert the local residents to the Mormon faith.

Mingle with fellow theatergoers before, during and after the shows. Sip on a cocktail, cold beer, glass of wine or soft drink at the two bars, located in the dress circle and stalls.

Situated in London’s West End, the theater is just a 2-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus Tube station. Parking is available for a fee at nearby Newport Place and Whitcomb Street.
