Perched on an island in the middle of Hoàn Kiếm Lake, Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain) is one of the most picturesque and peaceful spots in Hanoi. This fascinating historic and religious site is known for its scenic beauty, great photo opportunities and an interior filled with intriguing artifacts. Explore the area around the lake and cross the bright red Huc Bridge to reach the temple.

From the middle of the bridge, you’ll have a panoramic view of the lake, the Ngoc Son Temple and Thap Rua (Tortoise Pagoda) at the opposite end of the lake. Snap some photographs to remember the experience. At dusk, the lake becomes illuminated by the fading sun, painting a beautiful backdrop for photos.

The temple is constructed in a traditional Vietnamese style and its ornate entrance is considered one of the most impressive in the city.

The temple is still in use as a place of worship. Watch monks at pray and inhale the smell of burning joss sticks. Visit the temple’s various buildings, including the Pen Tower and Dac Nguyet Lau (Moon Contemplation Pavilion). Stop by the Martyr’s Memorial next to the temple to pay your respects to those that lost their lives fighting for Vietnam’s independence.

Ngoc Son Temple is located within the Hoàn Kiếm Lake precinct, immediately south of Hanoi’s old town and north of the French Quarter. Reach the temple on foot or by bus from most areas of central Hanoi. Some street parking is available in the area.

The temple is open daily and a small admission fee applies with discounts for students and young children. Pay at the booth before you cross the bridge to the temple.
