Find hotels in Mercatello from CA $93

The best area to stay in Mercatello is within the historic town centre itself, or just on its immediate outskirts, often referred to as Borgo San Martino.

The town centre, encircled by ancient walls, is where you'll find Mercatello's mediaeval charm. It's a compact area, easily explored on foot, with the Piazza Garibaldi at its heart. Here, you'll find the Collegiate Church and the Palazzo Comunale, alongside local shops and trattorias. Staying within the walls means you're right in the middle of everything, with easy access to the town's historic sites and daily life.

Couples looking for a romantic and tranquil escape will find the town centre particularly appealing. The quiet, narrow streets and the sense of stepping back in time create a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. You can enjoy strolls, discover hidden courtyards, and dine at local eateries without needing to venture far.

For those seeking a blend of convenience and a bit more space, especially families, staying just outside the walls in Borgo San Martino is an excellent choice. This area still offers very easy walking access to the town centre, usually within a few minutes, but often provides properties with gardens or more expansive views of the surrounding countryside.

The best time to visit Mercatello in Umbria is during the shoulder seasons, specifically late April to early June and September to October.

During these periods, the weather is pleasantly warm and sunny, superb for exploring the Umbrian countryside without the intense heat of mid-summer. You'll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed experience when visiting local attractions and dining at popular trattorias. This is ideal for couples seeking a romantic getaway or travellers looking for a peaceful escape.

For those interested in outdoor activities like hiking or cycling through the rolling hills and vineyards, the mild temperatures of spring and autumn are particularly inviting. The landscapes are at their most picturesque, with spring blossoms or autumn colours adding to the beauty of the region. This makes it a great time for solo travellers who want to enjoy nature and explore at their own pace.

If you prefer a livelier atmosphere and don't mind warmer temperatures, July and August can also be considered. While hotter and busier, these months often feature local festivals and outdoor events, offering a different kind of experience.
