![Mount Aso (阿蘇山, Asosan) is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu which most recently erupted in October 2016 but has since calmed down again. Aso's ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. In the center of the caldera stand the mountain's active volcanic peaks, including Mount Nakadake, shown in this photo.

Due to increased volcanic activity at the time of our visit, a no-entry zone was currently maintained and resulted in the closure of the ropeway, road and hiking trails to the crater. "A peaceful and relaxing simple retreat. Old style ryokan with tatami mats etc. We used the men only onsen and were basically alone in there. It was very clean and hot. Perfect. Also they offered complimentary coffee, tea and ramen cup. They provided everything we needed for using the baths. "
