This stunning Central American country offers picturesque colonial towns, surf and snorkel-friendly beaches and the chance to hike up towering volcanic peaks.

As the largest country in Central America, Nicaragua has plenty of terrain to explore. Get acquainted with local culture in educational museums, set sail to island paradises for sun and surf or embark on treks through steamy green jungles and active volcanoes.

Most visitors arrive in the capital city of Managua, before quickly departing for other destinations. If you can put up with the traffic and chaos, stick around for a bit and visit the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, a fascinating museum that explores Nicaragua’s rich history.

The colonial city of Granada is one of Nicaragua’s better-known destinations due to its photogenic architecture and cobblestone roads. Watch the sun set over Iglesia La Merced, an elegant 16th-century church. For an attraction the whole family can enjoy together, head to the ChocoMuseo where you can mold your own Nicaraguan chocolate and learn how to roast cocoa beans.

Off the eastern coast of Granada, Little Corn Island is a lovely chance for a getaway from the mainland. Wander through jungle paths leading past mango and coconut trees, or relax in a bungalow overlooking the ocean. Head to a bar to observe and perhaps even participate in one of Nicaragua’s most time-honored traditions: dancing.

Backpackers flock to the west coast town of San Juan del Sur, a bustling beach town surrounded by volcanic hills. Head further inland to hike the twin volcanoes on Ometepe Island, which sits in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Journey north to Masaya to browse the handicrafts for sale at the Mercado Municipal and the Mercado de Artesanias.

The most popular time to travel to Nicaragua is between December and April when the country enjoys hot and dry conditions. Brush up on your Spanish to communicate most effectively with the locals. Families will find Nicaragua child friendly.

Visit Nicaragua for an enchanting blend of unspoiled natural beauty and spectacular colonial architecture up and down the coastline.
