The forest trails near the hotel give travelers an alternative experience, and they can also see wild deer. The hotel is integrated with nature. A bit dated. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with futons. Overall the room was great, but the futons were the hardest, least comfortable of the trip. Our room on the 3rd floor had a wonderful view, despite Sakurajima being mostly hidden for the 3 days we were there. Staff were all very helpful and friendly and many of them spoke a little bit of English. The kaiseki dinners provided an excellent variety but an english menu would have been helpful. We experienced 2 of the 4 private onsens available on site. There was no additional fee for this, but they book out very quickly, particularly in the evening. There is a toilet and shower in the room, but the hot water is very slow to arrive, so shower at the onsen's is the recommended option.
