Central Chile Romantic Vacations

I travel extensively, and this was the first time a Marriott required an incidentals deposit by credit card without accepting a debit card. At check-in, I was asked for US$500, a requirement I had not known about when booking. At other hotels I have stayed at, these deposits have been optional for charging purchases to the room, and I have always been able to use a debit card. My credit card would not work outside the US. I asked whether someone at my company in the US could sign an authorization to use our company credit card. Cristina at the front desk said no and told me my only alternative was cash from a nearby ATM. I tried two ATMs, but neither allowed me to withdraw money with my international debit card. I only resolved the situation because a coworker used his personal credit card. Had I been traveling alone, I do not know what I would have done. Depending on a colleague to cover an unexpected deposit was uncomfortable and frustrating. My complaint is the lack of clear advance communication about the amount and payment restrictions, combined with the inflexibility I encountered when seeking a solution. The hotel should disclose these requirements before booking and offer practical alternatives. International travelers should confirm the deposit policy before arrival.

It was great overall, the only caveat (and this seems to be common in Chile) - was the parking. Was underground, on the -4 floor down a VERY steep spiral. An AWD SUV barely made it up, screeching wheels at max steering angle to make it up that spiral. 2WD vehicles without a diff lock would hang a wheel and not make it out of that basement. Takes ~20 minutes to get in and out of that basement garage. AVOID if you like taking day trips in your car. We didn't touch our rental car after parking on day-1 and getting it out on day-3. Otherwise it would've been a major hassle.
