On the west coastof the Isle of Pines is a magnificent bay with powdery white sand, clear water,a kaleidoscope of ocean life and scenic walks.
Spectacular Plage de Kuto (Kuto Beach) is an idyllictropical beach that overlooks the glistening Kuto Bay. It’s where thetransparent water of the Pacific Ocean laps at the shores of a horseshoe-shapedsweep of white sand backed by thick forests. Go snorkelling, enjoy picturesquewalks and take boat trips to other scenic parts of the Isle of Pines.
The beach’s safe and shallow water entices visitors totake a refreshing swim. Gaze down through the transparent sea to spot a multi-colouredcoral reef and an abundance of brightly coloured fish. Rent snorkellingequipment to get a closer look at the fascinating ocean life. Another goodlocation for snorkelling is Plage de Kaa Nuë Méra (KanumeraBeach). To get there, cross the small isthmus that separates the two beaches.
Sit on the soft sand and admire the stunning naturalscenery, which includes forests of tall pines and palm and gum trees. Arrange atrip on a traditional pirogue outrigger canoe to other areas of the island,such as Baie d’Upi (Upi Bay) and Nokanhui Atoll.
Walk to the northern end of the beach, where a coastalpathway skirts around a forest-clad headland. Follow the route for about 15minutes to reach the unspoiled Plage de Kutema (Kutema Beach). At the oppositeend of the beach is a small market. Browse for handmade bags, hats, sarongs andsandalwood oil.
Find Plage de Kuto on the west coast of the Isle ofPines, the southernmost island of the New Caledonia archipelago. Get here bycatching a ferry from Nouméa, on New Caledonia’s main island. Many people visitthe beach on daytrips or as part of a cruise. There are a handful of hotels andguesthouses for those who wish to stay overnight.
The mild climate of the Isle of Pines makes Plage de Kutoa great place to visit year-round. Expect downpours from December to April andcooler temperatures in the winter months.
