Serene, Restored House from Sugar Days with Sweeping Ocean Views

Serene, Restored House from Sugar Days with Sweeping Ocean Views

10/10 Excellent
"I cannot say enough wonderful things about this property. It was an oasis of serenity and absolutely as advertised. The view was breathtaking. The property was incredible - so much to explore and enjoy! The house was well-appointed and comfortable. The host, Marcel, was very responsive as was the on-site property manager, Kristi. The location was perfect for us - just about equidistant from both Kona and Hilo, close to Waimea, 10 minutes from downtown Honokaa (which is lovely and we did most of our shopping there), peaceful, and reasonably quiet. Others have made reference to street noise but honestly, it was not an issue for us. We were there in late September so timing may make a difference. Mobile phone service (at least for Verizon and AT&T) was bad to non-existent at the house but there is a landline and great Wifi so it wasn't an issue at all. We were on the Big Island to celebrate my friend's 60th birthday and it was absolutely perfect for us. While there were just two of us, the house can accommodate several more people. There is plenty of seating, beds were comfortable, there were beach towels, some beach accessories we did not use (but they were available), decent sized closets and enough hangers, FANS (because it was hot y'all), and a sweet, adorable resident cat who wandered over to say hello when we came home. We were there for a week and I could have very happily stayed longer."

Romantic waterfall cabin in the rain forest

Romantic waterfall cabin in the rain forest

"From the very beginning, we had a feeling this was going to be a great place. Communication with Katarina and Darin was easy from the start, and they were always very responsive. We stayed in the Waterfall Cabin, which overhangs the edge of the gully above a sizable waterfall that we could hear all night long. The porch has windows on all three sides, giving you the feeling of being right outside. The care and beauty of the property surrounding the waterfall were wonderful. The experience was unlike anything we had done before, and we would highly recommend it to others. Katarina was there when we arrived and was incredibly welcoming and friendly, offering help with anything we needed during our stay."

10/10 Excellent
"It was like living inside a fairytale, like Alice in Wonderland. The property and living area are spectacular. I love the art everywhere and the outdoor Waiulili stream and waterfall right on the property are breathtaking. We stayed there when hurricane nolo threatened the big island. It was rainy and windy but the beauty and comfort of the space outside and inside overpowered the worry of the storm. Darin was gracious and communicated well regarding our safety concerns. We even played a little in the stream when it stopped raining. I have amazing pictures. We hope to someday visit when it's sunny and we can splash in the Waiulili stream and soak in the absolute peacefulness and beauty of this place again. The old town of Honokaa is small, and very quaint. There are places to eat plate dinners. We had one and it was good. A pork stew with rice and potatoe salad. The people are very kind. The vastness of the valleys and green hills spattered with horses, goats and cattle leave you in awe. It's very very country up here. Like the upper peninsula in Michigan where I am from. We saw many waterfalls along the roads. Waipi'o Valley it's right down the road from the property and it is magical and first right in with the property."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Paauhau?
The best area to stay near Paauhau is along the North Kohala Coast, particularly in resorts between Waimea and Hawi, as Paauhau itself is a small, residential community with limited visitor accommodation. The North Kohala Coast offers a selection of high-end resorts and holiday rentals, many with direct beach access and ocean views. This region is known for its beautiful, untouched natural landscapes, including black sand beaches and dramatic cliffs. It's a quieter alternative to the more bustling Kona side of the island. For couples seeking a peaceful and luxurious escape, staying in a resort near Kawaihae is an excellent choice. These resorts often feature private villas, fine dining, and secluded beaches, great for relaxation and enjoying the stunning sunsets. The area is also convenient for exploring the Kohala Historical Sites State Monument and the charming town of Hawi, known for its art galleries and local shops.Families will find larger holiday rentals or resorts closer to Waimea appealing. Waimea, also known as Kamuela, offers more amenities like grocery stores and a wider selection of restaurants. It's a short drive to various beaches and provides easy access to adventures like horseback riding in the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country or visiting the Waipio Valley lookout.

You'll also find that accommodation prices are generally more favourable compared to the peak winter and summer months. This period is superb for couples looking for a relaxing escape with good weather for sightseeing and enjoying the natural beauty of the Big Island.Families will also appreciate the shoulder seasons, as the milder weather is comfortable for children, and attractions are less crowded.
