The Casa Número 6 Cultural Center gives a delightful insight into the day-to-day lives of the wealthier members of Campeche during the 19th century. Wander through the grand rooms of this mansion and see the furniture, architecture and even clothing which were common at the time.
Casa Número 6 was inaugurated as a cultural center in 2000, after years of housing a canteen, stores and offices. The extensive project restored the beautiful mansion to its former glory and it now provides a valuable reminder of the life and times of the upper-class families of the 19th century. Take a look around and imagine the families that once called this impressive building home.
Wander from room to room in the one-level house and notice the tiny details which have been carefully restored, such as the paintings hanging on the walls, the ornaments perched on mantelpieces and the intricate decorative tiles. While the outside of the building is rather austere, the interior is painted in rich yellows and reds, with deep red upholstery and curtains.
Visit the marble-tiled parlor where you will see dark wooden Cuban-style furniture, ornaments and ornate gold mirrors. Rocking chairs bring the room to life. Imagine a family relaxing in the cool here, away from the hot Mexican sun. Be sure to visit the terracotta-tiled kitchen too, where food is laid on the table and candles flicker invitingly.
A wide colonnaded back patio is a lovely spot in which to sit and enjoy a drink from the small on-site cafeteria. There are exhibition spaces and many informative signs dotted around. Browse the gift store for a memento to take home with you.
Casa Número 6 Cultural Center is located on Calle 57. It is usually open until late in the evening, so there is plenty of time to factor in a visit during your trip. There is an admission fee. Pay a little extra for the audio guide to get the most out of your visit.
