Get off the tourist trail in this immaculately preserved colonial city, which boasts picturesque cobbled streets, grand fortifications and plenty of personality.

The city of Campeche, capital of the state of the same name, is one of Mexico’s true gems. This beautiful colonial city has been painstakingly restored and today boasts dozens of buildings brought back to their original grandeur. The result is a city centre of cobbled streets, pastel-colored colonial façades and mighty fortifications. Spend a few days getting to know Campeche and it is easy to see why it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status. It is no wonder that several period movies have been filmed in Campeche. Even the telephone and electrical cables have been put underground to avoid spoiling the view.

Embark on a walking tour of the old town to soak up the sights at leisure. Begin at Parque Principal, which is encircled by magnificent colonial mansions. The grand Campeche Cathedral stands here too. Come on a Sunday to see it filled with hundreds of devout worshippers.(bastions) and imagine the days long-ago when pirates frequently plundered this wealthy city. Watch the Puerta de Tierra Sound and Light Show at the Baluarte de San Francisco or visit the Museum of Mayan Architecture in the Baluarte de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.

Just outside of the city, the Fuerte de San Miguel stands as the largest colonial fort in the state. Explore the great fortification with its replica cannons before heading into the impressive Museo Arqueológico de Campeche (Campeche Archaeological Museum). The museum brings to life the history and culture of the Mayan people and contains hundreds of finds from the most significant archaeological sites in the state.

This is not, however, a staid, museum-like city. Experience its bustling atmosphere at the Central Market, along the “malecón”(boardwalk) and in the countless local restaurants. Join locals at the Parque Principal for lively concerts and festivals.

Campeche is located in Campeche State on the Yucatán Peninsula. Catch one of the regular flights from Mexico City’s international airport to Campeche. The city is also well connected by long-distance coaches from cities such as Cancún.
