A mesmerizing cathedral, a cultural palace and a renovated colonial building are among the attractions overlooking the gardens of this central plaza.
Plaza de la Independencia is the main square of Campeche, where many of the city’s most prominent landmarks stand. Scenic tree-laden gardens with benches surround a central kiosk that offers information for visitors. Visit Plaza de la Independencia to get a sense of the local culture.
Among the city’s most active areas, the plaza is where many events take place. Check the events schedule in the central pavilion. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, view the 30-minute light-and-sound show that traces the history of Campeche. The show is projected onto the façade of El Palacio Centro Cultural, which contains a museum with a focus on the history of business, fortification and navigation in the region.
Marvel at the impressive Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción that dominates the eastern side of the square. It is recognizable by its imposing white twin towers. At night the façade, is bathed in glorious light when the lanterns of the square’s central section also turn on.
Walk around to the opposite side of the square to see the restored Casa No. 6, whose period architecture and furniture provide a glimpse of life for the affluent during the colonial era.
The square dates back to the 16th century and was formerly known as Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Constitución. From the square you can board the Transporte Turístico trolley to go on its open-air tour of the Old Town. Purchase tickets at the plaza’s central pavilion.
Plaza de la Independencia stands at the northern end of the historic center of Campeche, just a short walk from the coast. Walk east from the Baluarte de San Carlos for 5 minutes to reach it. Once here, visit other surrounding landmarks such as the Parque de Moch Couoh, the Campeche Government Palace and the Letras Campeche.
