Carabacel

Sitting directly north of the Old Town, this historic neighbourhood features several of Nice’s finest cultural venues and art galleries.

The central Nice neighbourhood of Carabacel is a great place to begin exploring this beautiful city. Stroll along the Paillon, a coastal river bordering Carabacel to the south. For much of its course to the sea, the river is covered by pathways and promenades. View Carabacel landmarks including the Hospital Saint-Roch, a lemon-hued building in Palladian style.

Carabacel is a largely residential part of town, characterized by parks, squares and grand Belle Époque architecture. Amble down the Rue de Lépante, one of the neighbourhood’s main boulevards. Find restaurants, shops and cafés beneath tall terraces. Their pastel-painted walls and wooden shutters create attractive images.

Continue to the district’s eastern edge to the lively Promenade des Arts. Here, discover some of Nice’s top cultural attractions squeezed together in a small space. The promenade itself is a tree-lined area of lawns and paths and is a peaceful place to sit and relax for a few minutes.

The centerpiece of the promenade is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC). One of the finest museums in Nice, it has artworks from across France and beyond, most of which date from the 1950s onward. See the work of local Nice artists, such as Yves Klein and Arman, as well as pieces by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Having explored the superb exhibits of MAMAC, head directly south to the Théâtre National de Nice. This impressive venue hosts all kinds of performances, from classical Greek plays to modern puppet shows. Another iconic building nearby is the Tête Carrée, a library administration building shaped like a giant head. The Museum of Natural History is also located on the eastern edge of the Promenade des Arts.

To reach Carabacel, drive northeast for about 15 minutes from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. The neighbourhood is well served by the city’s bus and tram system, but also easy to traverse on foot.
