"Amazing secluded beach - no alcohol"
Our group of five had an amazing relaxing break at this hotel to recover from traveling and safari on the mainland. The beach access was the highlight as well as the highly attentive staff and delicious dinners. One draw back was that alcohol is no longer served at the resort. You have to walk 20-30 minutes down the beach to another resort if you want alcohol. We also had issues arranging our transportation to the hotel. They said their driver would pick us up at a rearranged time but he never arrived. Absolutely stunning location.

"Nice beach front hotel at Matemwe."
We had an enjoyable stay here over Christmas. Gabriella the manager was welcoming and attentive to our needs. The staff were reasonably efficient.

"Normal hotel"
The Hotel is ok, nothing outstanding, but ok. The service wasn t good, as it is in most of the island. It seems like the staff didn t understand really what was one requesting, every time i asked for sthg never got it. I hate when they see that there are 4 people sleeping in the room and they always put towels as if we were 2.

"Superb location on a paradise island beach"
The hotel staff were excellent - friendly and obliging. The service and food superb. The atmosphere very relaxed and unfussy. We booked B&B which turned out to be more economical than Full Board even though we ate at the hotel for every meal. There are no nearby places better. Stone Town is an hour away by taxi, costing $50 each way, so this is an hotel to actually STAY at, and the beach and pool are superb. There is excellent 5* dive centre for SCUBA and snorkelling nearby which hotel arranges and is not to be missed - glorious sea life! Only downside is that Zanzibar cannot provide enough fresh water to supply all the hotels, so all the water in bathroom - shower and basin and in pool on the coast is salt water. Not salt water in Stone Town, however. It was very hot in November so rinsing in cold bottled water provided, after a shower while extravagant was okay as didn't like feeling 'salty' all the time. But the beach front huts are wonderfully peaceful and private, very comfortable beds and quite basic beach-hut living feel.

"Great relaxing stay without the usual hassles"
A VERY relaxing stay at a part of this long beach that is quiet and largely devoid of annoyances often experienced on beaches in East Africa. The restaurant is usually superb with a menu that changes every day. The staff and the Italian managers of the place are professional and personable. Just wonderful. Visitors should note that this place is within a short distance of a number of other places on this strip of beach so even if there are no rooms available, going to its restaurant at least is worth the effort. In the end, highly recommended.

"Beautiful beach and great staff"
Stunning location with a beautiful private beach. We stayed in one of the ocean bungalows, which had a beautiful balcony with a great view. Staff was super nice and accommodating and helped us with a variety of needs, from broken shoes to stomach troubles. Cocktails were delicious, food wasn't amazing but it was pretty good. Highly recommended!

"A Paradise on the Beach!"
This is one of those places that words can never do justice to. You have to visit to experience. The staff are amazing.. From the team onsite at the lodge to the water sports staff, they work around the clock to ensure your stay is pleasant without being overbearing. I am going to return to the hotel for another stay. I have traveled around the world and stayed in a lot of paradise-type hotels and Metemwe lodge is in that league without a doubt. A big thanks to Marco, Arthur and Salum. You guys were awesome hosts.

"Great place to stay"
We stayed 5 days at Sahari. The entire setup of the hotel is very charming, with a beautiful main building, pool area and open space dining area in front of the beach. From what we've seen one of the prettiest hotels in bwejuu and paje given the price. Great value for money. They don't have a lot of rooms so it really feels like a boutique hotel and you soon know all the staff and easily get to speak to the other hotel guests, which we really liked. Also the staff and manager have been really nice and helpful. Breakfast was perfect for the time being but might get a bit monotone if you stay longer. It's generally takes a while until the food arrives but that's actually a general Zanzibar phenomena. In bwejuu itself nothing is happening, but it's only a 25min walk down the beach to paje. And one might actually enjoy the quietness compared to paje were there are much more people in the resorts and at the beach. For the 5 days we definitely had enough little activities and attractions that we could reach within a 30 minute walk or drive. Really the only downside was that our first night, December 31st, we were checked into an empty house next to the actual hotel. Rooms were absolutely simple and only a shared bathroom on the floor. And the staff didn't even try to explain or feel sorry for what was happening. I guess they wanted to maximise the high season days but this is absolutely not acceptable. Luckily we could shift the next day so it was quickly forgotten.

    East Coast Zanzibar Hotels Guide

Sheltered by a long barrier reef, the east coast of Zanzibar is known for its gently sloping shock-white beaches and coral cliffs. More sparsely populated than the west, its rural resorts lie on pristine sections of coast and range from ultra luxury to rustic retreats. Inland, rare red colobus monkeys can be seen on the trail to the coral caves of the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest 20 km from Stone Town.
