When is the best time to go to Chinatown?

The best time to visit Chinatown, Auckland, is typically during the warmer, drier months from November to April, especially for those seeking to enjoy outdoor activities and cultural festivals. During this period, the weather is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for exploring the bustling markets, street food stalls, and outdoor events. Many cultural celebrations, such as the Chinese New Year festivities, often take place within this window, offering a lively and colourful experience for visitors. These events often feature traditional performances, parades, and special culinary offerings. For those prioritising a more relaxed visit with fewer crowds, particularly couples, the shoulder seasons of November to early December or March to April can be excellent.

Top Chinatown Hotel Reviews

Grand Millennium Auckland

8/10 Good

"Aircon was very loud. Pillows were too mushy. Not enough towels for 4 people however when asked, it was swiftly dealt with. Apart from that we had an enjoyable stay."

ibis budget Auckland Airport

10/10 Excellent

"A great place to stay if you’re flying into or out of AKL, good sized room, good noise insulation. One downside is the split mattresses. It is impossible to sleep in the centre of the beds so effectively you have to sleep in a single bed. They try to push an expensive shuttle bus to and from the terminals, however, it is around 1 km to walk. Half of it is covered and the rest is in carparks or quiet streets. Quite expensive for fewer facilities than a motel. But for me the 100% extra cost is worth not having to wait to be picked up or dropped off."
