“Beautiful, Quiet and Serene”

This was a great choice! We didn't have the parking (and fee) hassle of staying downtown. It was a beautiful location - views of the harbor, minutes from everything you could want. The hotel staff was efficient and friendly. I'm going to stay here every time we go to San Diego from now on!

“Not impressed”

The room was very small, hardly walk between beds. No light in the shower area.

“Great location if you have a rental car”

We chose the Island Palms based on the Trip Adviser & Expedia reviews and we were super happy. The room was great with a nice view of the Marina and the location was great if you have a rental car if not I would probably avoid since there really isn't much within walking distance. Checkout Hector's close by on Rosecrans for great breakfast burritos.

“Great hotel at a great price!”

Location of this hotel is fabulous. Right on the marina. There's even a kids play area across the street. It's 15 minutes from Sea World and 15 minutes from San Diego Zoo. We upgraded our room to 2 queen size beds and loved it. Our view was fantastic. The room was clean and spacious. The bathroom was clean and bright. Water pressure was great too. And best of all, it was super quiet at night. I didn't hear all the chatter from our neighbors room and no noise from the street either. Booking through Expedia means there were no hidden charges. Service at the hotel was also very friendly. It took me 3 minutes to check in since I paid everything online already. I will definitely go back to this hotel when I visit San Diego again.

What to pack

Hotel provides lots of towels, a great hair dryer, and all necessary toiletries. Anything that was forgotten you can just call the front desk and they will deliver.

Lots of GREAT restaurants near this hotel. Just Yelp it!

Outdoors or beach

If you love the beach this hotel is right along it. Lots of people walk along the beach at night or jog in the daytime. If you love boating there's a marina just a few feet away.

“Great location and value”

The room was even nicer than the photos, great view, water on both sides of the hotel, two pools/jacuzzis, convienient drive to anywhere.

Cabrillio National Monument, great view of the bay, and chance to check out the tide pools.

“Loved the laid-back atmosphere -- would stay there again.”

The area, comfort and cleanliness of the hotel were outstanding. Our complaints include a refrigerator that did not work as well as a sluggish remote control for the TV. Overall, it was a good experience, and we would definitely stay there again.

“Impressive Hotel”

We enjoyed staying here, Hotel is in a quieter off the beaten path location giving it a nice private feel. Room was large, nicely decorated with a great view. Staff members were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.

“better than average”

Stayed one night in November, 2011. Very convenient to San Diego Int'l airport(5 minutes) but without feeling like it. Nice large room(154) though should have insisted on one on the marina side since this side was noisy with military aircraft and other noises. Had breakfast in the restaurant which was nice and overlooked the marina.

Area recommendations

Went to Humphrey's next door and enjoyed dinner, drinks and music in the lounge. Did not see anything else on Shelter Island were we wanted to eat/drink. Enjoyed walking along the path by the water.

“Would definately go back”

We had a waterfront view of the harbour, and it was very peaceful. The beds were extremely comfortable. The nice part about this location is that it is a non through road, so there is very limited traffic and noise! The next time around, I might consider a Marina view though because it extremely pretty to see all of the yachts. The staff was very kind, and the service was good.

“Lovely Location”

We took a quick weekend jaunt to San Diego, which was also our first visit to this city. This hotel was a little older, and my guess was that as other properties adjacent to whatever was the original building went up for sale, the hotel bought them and expanded. So I can't speak to all the rooms, as there were a couple of different styles of exteriors, so probably the interiors were a little different. Our room in the Casa Marina building was very nice. It was huge (I've lived in apartments smaller than that room), the beds were super comfortable, and the bathroom equally enormous. It's main selling point, however, was the gorgeous view...the skyline to the left, the bay and open waters to the right. It was what we came to San Diego to see, and it was really great. Not a 5-star hotel by any means, but clean, comfortable, well located, and with a great view!
