    California Hotel Guide

California's nickname "The Golden State" hails back to the 1849 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, just outside of what is now the state capital of Sacramento. The moniker, though, could just as easily refer to the colour of the sun beating down on California's glorious beaches or the colour of the Oscars given out in Los Angeles every year in a televised ceremony watched by a billion people around the globe.

To people who know and love it, California isn't one state but almost two: Northern California and Southern California. Finding the best California hotel deals in each takes some legwork.

The misty groves of Northern California are home to the giant Sequoia redwoods, the oldest and tallest living creatures on earth. Napa Valley is one of the premiere wine-making regions in the world.

Monarch butterflies migrate by the tens of thousands every year at Santa Cruz's Natural Bridges State. John Steinbeck's favourite city, Monterey, features a world-class aquarium, playful otters swimming in the harbour, and Ed (Doc) Ricketts' original laboratory.

Iconic San Francisco tourist destinations like Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Embarcadero, and Fisherman's Wharf are thrilling to behold. Explore the twisting paths, arboretums, and flowers of the city's Golden Gate Park, or ride a cable car to view Alcatraz Island from the top of Nob Hill.

Southern California is known for its gorgeous weather, its white-sand beaches, and Los Angeles. LA has first-class museums like the Getty Center, the California Science Center, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

LA is first and foremost a film industry town. Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, and Universal all host studio tours where you can view the sound stages where your favourite TV shows are filmed, and maybe even get to talk to a star!

Closer to the shared border with Mexico, San Diego has a world-class zoo with giant pandas, the SeaWorld theme park, and LEGOLAND for your little engineers.

How will you fit everything California has to offer into one trip? The secret is to narrow down the must-do attractions and select nearby California hotels. Expedia can help you find California hotel packages and other cheap hotel deals in California close to the centres of action. Go online, enter your criteria, find comfortable rooms at special discount rates and prices, and book your reservations. Whether you're looking for a cheap California hotel deal or a lavish resort where the sky is the limit, Expedia has hotels in California you'll want to stay in.

This a great hotel. Only downside is that you have nightly paid parking. Overall I would recommend this hotel if you are vacationing in the LAX area of Los Angeles.

"A pretty upscale hotel that is dog friendly."
To find a dog friendly hotel is tough. To find one that is not a one star hotel even tougher. This hotel allows pets and is a great place to stay. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The room had great space and was very clean. The hallways and room doors did show a little age. A parking garage is attached to the hotel which adds convenience. We also had breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel and it was pretty tasty.

"Comfortable room, excellent service, great food!"
I was there for three days during an on-site conference. For the conference the staff was excellent, prompt, and professional. The food that was served, prepared on-site, was very very good. Conference facilities were modern, clean and well equipped. From the overnight perspective my room was very spacious. The bathroom was clean, enjoying both a tub and separate shower. Bed was very cozy, slept extremely well. I had a flight delay and arrived much later than they had expected. I was marked for early check-in at noon, but did not arrive until 7:30pm. I was offered a free upgrade from my standard room to a king suite, and was given access to the business class level floor for their Imperial Lounge offering free breakfast and daily happy hour. Needless to say you "won me at Hello". Was a very pleasant surprise after a long day of travel and very generous offer. The next time I find myself in San Francisco I will return to the Nikko Hotel! Great job Nikko family!

    "Pleasant hotel in good location"
We were invited to an evening function at the Contemporary Jewish Museum and wanted a comfortable, reasonably priced hotel nearby. The Park Central fit our needs very well, as it was in the same block as the museum. It was also reasonably convenient to the BART, which allowed us to travel to the hotel from the airport and back without having to rent a car. We ate a good, if rather expensive, meal in MaSO, the hotel restaurant, and went for breakfast to La Boulange, which was a block or two away. The room itself was comfortable and we slept well.

    "Best Hotel in San Diego"
Stayed in the hotel for 3 nights of our honeymoon. It was in a fantastic location, and was a very grand looking hotel. We had a room overlooking the harbour on a high floor which was lovely. You won't get a nicer, more comfy or cleaner room anywhere. It was the best out of 4 hotels we stayed in during our honeymoon. The staff knew it was our honeymoon and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine and free breakfast. No other hotel did this for us. It is located near bars and shops and just down the road from the USS Midway. If you get a chance to stay there then do it.

I've stayed at the Sofia hotel a few times for events at the Convention Center. The rooms are compact, but you don't really need more space when you're travelling alone. The Convention Center is a short 15 min walk away and there are a ton of restaurants and bars nearby.
