    California Hotel Guide

California's nickname "The Golden State" hails back to the 1849 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, just outside of what is now the state capital of Sacramento. The moniker, though, could just as easily refer to the colour of the sun beating down on California's glorious beaches or the colour of the Oscars given out in Los Angeles every year in a televised ceremony watched by a billion people around the globe.

To people who know and love it, California isn't one state but almost two: Northern California and Southern California. Finding the best California hotel deals in each takes some legwork.

The misty groves of Northern California are home to the giant Sequoia redwoods, the oldest and tallest living creatures on earth. Napa Valley is one of the premiere wine-making regions in the world.

Monarch butterflies migrate by the tens of thousands every year at Santa Cruz's Natural Bridges State. John Steinbeck's favourite city, Monterey, features a world-class aquarium, playful otters swimming in the harbour, and Ed (Doc) Ricketts' original laboratory.

Iconic San Francisco tourist destinations like Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Embarcadero, and Fisherman's Wharf are thrilling to behold. Explore the twisting paths, arboretums, and flowers of the city's Golden Gate Park, or ride a cable car to view Alcatraz Island from the top of Nob Hill.

Southern California is known for its gorgeous weather, its white-sand beaches, and Los Angeles. LA has first-class museums like the Getty Center, the California Science Center, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

LA is first and foremost a film industry town. Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, and Universal all host studio tours where you can view the sound stages where your favourite TV shows are filmed, and maybe even get to talk to a star!

Closer to the shared border with Mexico, San Diego has a world-class zoo with giant pandas, the SeaWorld theme park, and LEGOLAND for your little engineers.

How will you fit everything California has to offer into one trip? The secret is to narrow down the must-do attractions and select nearby California hotels. Expedia can help you find California hotel packages and other cheap hotel deals in California close to the centres of action. Go online, enter your criteria, find comfortable rooms at special discount rates and prices, and book your reservations. Whether you're looking for a cheap California hotel deal or a lavish resort where the sky is the limit, Expedia has hotels in California you'll want to stay in.

"Fancy experience for a quick stay between flights"
Gorgeous hotel! The lobby was being renovated but the room was awesome. They had prepackaged Starbucks cups in the rooms with Starbucks coffee in large teabag-type things for brewing. Bathroom was a little cramped but very clean. Nice chairs for sitting. Adjustable lights on both sides of the bed. Beautiful, classy color choices. Recommended!

    "Best stay to date..."
I have stayed in many hotels due to work and vacation travel. This has been the best stay I have had to date. The staff was super nice and helpful and the rooms were clean and nice. If parking cost less, it would have been unbeatable.

We had a wonderful time, the check in counter staff was really sweet, but the valet boy was not all that courtesy. One more thing is that by the night, lots of street noise still going on...

"Better than expected...perfect San Fran experience"
We stayed for 3 nights at the Hotel Nikko on the 20th floor ("Nikko Floor"). Upon arrival, we asked for two queen beds, instead of a king, and they changed our reservation with no problem at all. We were totally impressed by our large, spacious room with an INCREDIBLE city view. We were pleasantly surprised to find a very large, modern bathroom with a tub separate from the shower. Beds were super soft, and comfortable; we slept like babies with minimal noise from the city/other guests. Hotel Nikko is situated nicely with the perfect amount of distance from Union Square and the BART. Very short walk to the F-train (trolley), bus stops, and cable cars. We walked to Chinatown. Housekeeping cleaned our room twice a day and even left chocolates on our pillows. Room was immaculate the entire stay!!! All in all, we will definitely stay here again, on our next trip to this amazing city. I highly recommend this hotel!

"Great hotel perfectly situated in the city. "
The hotel is perfectly situated to experience the best of San Francisco. We didn't have alot of time, so the placement of the hotel was critical to our ability to see a variety of attractions around the city. We found that it was easy to get in and around the city from our hotel. The amenities were great as well. The only downside was the cost of parking our vehicle overnight.

"Better for business than vacation, but still good"
I booked this hotel via Expedia for a family vacation. It's a nice hotel - very beautiful lobby, bars, etc. However, I think it's better suited for business than vacation. For one thing, it's extremely expensive. The breakfast buffet is $27/person. Family of 4 with tip was $120. Also, it seems San Diego is just expensive in general. Most meals for 4 at restaurants in the area (like the Gaslamp District) ran between $160 and $300. You can do cheap, but there's not much around for that within walking distance. With that said, it's a great location. Close to the USS Midway and other local attractions. Otherwise, you'll want to rent a car. Don't forget to include $30/night for parking. Like I said, nice place, but be prepared to lay out some cash.
