Hotel Bologna

8/10 Good

"Rather faded glory - the room needed a refresh as did the common areas"

Grand Hotel Duomo

10/10 Excellent

"The two things that we loved the most about this hotel was its location, just a few steps from the Piazza del Duomo and the roof terrace. The views from the rooftop bar were stunning especially of an evening when the tower and cathedral were illuminated. The hotel itself is a little dated in places but it was clean, the staff were excellent , our room was good with a comfy bed and housekeeping every day. Breakfast was fine with plenty of choice. Would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking to visit Pisa."

Hotel Verdi Pisa

10/10 Excellent

"Loved the rustic charm of this hotel. 10 minutes to the tower on foot very conveniently located. Loved the cafe on the ground floor. We went every morning for our coffee and brought it back to the room whilst getting ready. The staff were amazing so helpful. There is a lift if you need to use it. Nice table and chairs outside to have a relax and a coffee and pastry. The only thing was we were cold so asked for extra blankets which were brought immediately. Great shower and bathroom with products if you need them. Room cleaned daily with fresh towels. We all loved Pisa the people were so polite and not as crowded as Florence so makes it an ideal place to be based. I would highly recommend and definitely stay again. Thank you to all the wonderful staff."

Villa Madrè San Rossore Apartments - Self Check-In

10/10 Excellent

"We absolutely loved our stay at this apartment in Pisa! The building is modern and new, and the apartment itself is so compact, clean and beautifully presented. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect, just 10 minutes from the airport and close to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Parking was also easy and convenient, which was a big bonus. We couldn’t have asked for a better place for our stay and would happily return. Highly recommended!"

Hotel La Pace

8/10 Good

"A typical Italian hotel with traditional decor and close to Pisa Train station. We had a family room which was ample for 2nts. Only issue was I was bitten by a rogue mosquito about 7x which I thought was unusual for this time of year. Overall this didn’t dampen our spirits - the torrential rain on the other hand was on another level! Overall this was a good hotel (breakfast was ok too (especially the pastries and coffee) and the location was ok. It was about a 15 mins walk to the tower."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in San Donato?

The best area to stay in San Donato is within the village centre itself, particularly around the main piazza, Piazza Malaspina.

This compact village is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The central piazza is the hub of activity, surrounded by traditional stone buildings, a few local eateries, and small shops. The village is easily walkable, with narrow streets winding up and down gentle slopes, offering views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves.

Couples looking for a romantic and authentic Tuscan experience will find the village centre ideal. You'll be within easy reach of wine-tasting experiences at nearby vineyards and can enjoy strolls through the village in the evenings. The smaller, boutique hotels and guesthouses here often provide a more personal touch.

For families, staying slightly outside the immediate village centre, perhaps in an agriturismo or villa within a 5-10 minute drive, offers more space and amenities.

When is the best time to go to San Donato?

The best time to visit San Donato, Tuscany, is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) months.

During spring, the countryside blossoms with wildflowers, and the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for exploring the vineyards and olive groves. Temperatures are comfortable for outdoor activities like cycling or walking through the rolling hills. You'll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer season, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

Autumn brings the grape harvest (vendemmia) and olive picking season, which can be a fascinating time to visit. The landscapes are painted in rich, warm colours, and the air is crisp. This period is great for food and wine enthusiasts, as many local festivals celebrate the new produce.
