Gaze in awe at the changing blue hues of a manmade lake and watch as a mystical forest reflects perfectly in its chilly waters.

For a unique and tranquil daytrip and the chance to experience a jaw-dropping phenomenon, visit the pretty Blue Pond of Hokkaido. Opened to the public in 2010, this artificial pond attracts visitors in search of serenity and photographers on the hunt for enviable shots. Follow the trail that encompasses Blue Pond and leads to various viewpoints.

The idea for the pond came about in 1988 following the eruption of Mount Tokachi. In the aftermath, ponds were built to prevent the town of Biei from becoming damaged by volcanic mudflow. The blue color of the water is a result of the presence of aluminum hydroxide, which flows from a nearby hot spring and enters the pond via a river. This is complemented by sulfur and lime turning the waterbed white.

A short trail winds around the pond and offers several vantage points along the way. Depending on the time of day, the color of the water can change with the sunlight. On clear days it is a brilliant shade of blue and presents a perfect mirror image of the framing lush green forest have your camera ready to take photos. Wintertime offers an alternative perspective as a blanket of shimmering snow covers the banks and treetops.

Located close to Biei village, the pond is a 50-minute drive from Asahikawa and just under 3 hours by car from Sapporo. The most convenient way to get here is by rented car. Use the free parking at the trailhead. During the summer months sightseeing buses departing from Biei and Furano include stops here.

Admission to Blue Pond is free and it is accessible year round. Complete the trail in 10 minutes or stay longer to appreciate the colors, scenery and serenity. You might want to include trips to other nearby attractions. Among them are Shirahige Waterfall, Shirogane Onsen hot springs and the Tokachidake Observatory, which offers views of Mount Tokachi.
