The best area to stay in Bressay is near the ferry terminal in Maryfield, as this offers the most convenient access to the island's amenities and transport links.Maryfield is the main settlement on Bressay, situated right where the ferry from Lerwick docks. It's a small, pleasant village with a few local services. The ferry journey itself is short, only about seven minutes, making it very easy to travel back and forth to Shetland's mainland for additional shops and restaurants. The Bressay Lighthouse, a prominent landmark, is also easily accessible from here, offering lovely views. For couples looking for a relaxing getaway, staying near Maryfield provides a quiet base with easy access to walking paths and the island's natural beauty. You can enjoy strolls along the coast, visit the Bressay Heritage Centre to learn about local history, or simply unwind with views across the water to Lerwick.

The best time to visit Bressay is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is mildest and the days are long.During this period, you'll experience the famous "simmer dim," where daylight extends late into the evening, sometimes only dimming for a few hours around midnight. This provides ample opportunity for outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and wildlife watching. The Bressay Lighthouse, a prominent landmark on the island's south-east coast, is particularly striking under these extended daylight conditions.Birdwatchers will find June and July especially rewarding, as these months coincide with the breeding season for many seabirds. The cliffs around the island, particularly near the lighthouse and in the Noss National Nature Reserve (a short ferry ride from Bressay), are filled with species like puffins, gannets, and guillemots. While the summer offers the most comfortable weather for exploring Bressay's natural beauty, the shoulder seasons of May and September can also be pleasant, often with fewer visitors and still decent daylight hours.
