"I love off-the-beaten path accommodations, especially ones with history, so the Shady Lady was at the top of my list for this trip to see the Death Valley superbloom! It was a little farther away from Beatty than I'd originally thought (my fault for not mapping it accurately), but its remote location made for great stargazing and put me near some far-flung areas that I'd wanted to explore anyway. I was so grateful that my host Nigel met me at my car upon my late arrival, since it was so dark out, and he made me feel right at home by showing me all around and making sure I could find my way to my room and to the common areas. I absolutely loved communal breakfast in the morning and hanging out with the peacocks outside! Very quiet at night, friendly atmosphere.
Among the need-to-know items are that the rooms don't lock from the outside—so while you can lock them while you're in the room, you're leaving your stuff unsecured while you're away. It was totally fine in the end, but I'm a city girl so it made me a little nervous. There are also dogs and cats (a sweetie indoor one and at least one feral one outside) which was a MAJOR plus for me, but beware if you have allergies or don't like to mingle with other people's pets."
