West Virginia Vacation Packages

Enjoy outdoor activities in the highlands and valleys of this eastern state. It lies totally within and surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.

The mountains of West Virginia attract visitors for summer and winter sports. See historical sites related to the state’s coal mining heritage and its role in the American Civil War.

West Virginia was once part of Virginia, but seceded during the lead-up to America’s War Between the States; its citizens did not support the Confederacy’s slavery position. Given its border location between the northern and southern states, the area has many historic sites commemorating its wartime heritage. Find statues of heroes from both sides of the war in the state capital of Charleston.

Explore many of the state’s top attractions in Charleston’s Cultural Center, with the State Museum and a theater. The State Capitol Building has one of the highest domes of all US capitals. Take a tour to appreciate its marble walls and cut-glass chandelier. Also in Charleston is the West Virginia Veterans Memorial, honoring over 10,000 state participants in 20th-century wars.

In Beckley, experience the cold, dark conditions of underground mining of the 1900s at the Exhibition Coal Mine. Aboveground, visit the planetarium and restored homestead, schoolhouse and other historic buildings.

In summer, hike, mountain bike, boat, fish and whitewater raft or kayak. Try snowshoeing, skiing and ice fishing in winter. Camp in a tent or RV across the state. Rent ATVs to ride along the Hatfield-McCoy Trails for off-road adventure. This area is named for a violent two-decade post-Civil War feud between two families.

The full area of West Virginia lies within the Appalachian Mountains, providing plenty of spots for rock climbing and cave exploration. Take lessons, venture out on your own or arrange a multi-sport tour with backpacking, climbing, rafting and camping.

For a little less exertion, try antiquing along rural byways. Go to Morgantown to stroll through the West Virginia Botanic Garden and Earl L. Core Arboretum. Watch spectacular college football and basketball at West Virginia University.

Enjoy West Virginia, the “Mountain State,” with some of the best outdoor adventure opportunities in the nation.
