Investigate the elegant rooms of one of the most photographed buildings in Merida, a centuries-old property covered in pastel pink.
With its pink façade, clock tower and white columns and arches, the Palacio Municipal on Plaza Grande in downtown Merida is a striking sight. This is the city's town hall, a working building that is also open to the public. It dates back to the first half of the 16th century and has undergone numerous changes since then. Step inside to explore some of its grand rooms.
Visit the council's meeting hall and enjoy the palace’s paintings and murals. Some of the works depict key moments in the development of modern day Mexico. Go out onto the tiled balcony for the splendid views of the plaza and Merida Cathedral. While you are touring the palace, stop by the tourist information office on the first floor to find out more about the area and what’s going on in Merida during your stay.
When you are back outside, take a few moments to appreciate the beauty of the building, which is adorned with coats of arms. A good time to appreciate the exterior is at night when its features are enhanced by being bathed in light.
The palace is open every day to visitors, but closes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Admission is free. In addition to self-guided tours, you can join free guided tours. These tours also include other buildings that border the plaza. They are conducted in English and Spanish and take place every morning except Sundays. The Palacio Municipal is next to another prominent Merida building, the Olimpo Cultural Center. Put it on your travel itinerary for its program of art exhibitions, concerts and dance performances. The center is also home to a planetarium.
