For us it was okay but the stairs were very steep so keep that in mind. The bathroom is outside so not sure how comfortable this is in the winter. It was one of the highlights of our 2 weeks in Japan. Yasakahan is perfectly situated in the heart of Gion. Everything is walkable. The location is unbelievable, located on a side street yet literally steps from shops and food. It has a very close view of the Yasaka Pagoda from the second floor. The home itself is beautiful and meticulously clean, and equipped with essentials for a very comfortable stay. The washer/dryer was convenient and easy to use. The bathroom is on the first floor and bedroom is on the second floor. We opted to sleep in one of the rooms on the first floor for easy nighttime access to the bathroom while our children were on the second floor. Check in and check out were a breeze. We loved it here and would most definitely come back to this home for future visits to Kyoto. If you would like to stay close to the touristy spot in Kyoto, the location doesn't get any better. The view of the pagoda from the upstairs living room is amazing. The host was friendly and staff was helpful in replying to my emails in English. The foot bath was so relaxing after a long day of working. Things that may be slightly inconvenient: limited space to open the luggage (only front entrance area, and blinds were semi-transparent from outside at night); lack of full-body mirror (the only mirror is in the shower, which is a little inconvenient for me put on makeup since I need to carry my supplies in-and-out multiple times through the garden); washroom is located down the steep and narrow stairs (which could be a safety hazard if you wake up at night and need to use it). However, much of this is determined by the layout of the house, so it's not something that can be easily accommodated. Every possible thing needed had been provided. We loved the bathroom. The little library was fantastic, and I loved to sit upstairs in the morning and watch the sun come up over eastern hills with a coffee and a book. Beds were good, it's quiet & dark, slept well. Great to have a washer-drier. Underfloor heating was good. the Arabica coffee shop at the end of the street was nice and there's zero line at 8am. The area is vibrant with lots to see, places to eat and shop. Very comfortable for 2 people, if you were 6 you better be real good friends. However, the street leading up to Kiyomizudera was packed especially at weekends, even from early morning. (the evenings were fine.) I know it's been this way for 100s of years, it's nothing new, but still. It's quite a walk to the nearest rail station (10-15mins) and then not so convenient to get to Kyoto station- if you have a rail pass and plan side trips out of Kyoto, it's not convenient (Keihan line has a lot of good sights). Also it is 15min walk to the arcades/main shopping streets. There are buses of course but they are absolutely full so we ended up walking most of the time.
