Gaze up at the exotic birds and spot the elephants and lions in one of the world’s most famous wildlife reserves.

Etosha National Park comprises a vast and varied terrain adorned with watering holes that attract some of Africa’s most majestic wild animals. The scenic park covers an area of more than 7,700 square miles (20,000 square kilometers), much of which comprises the Etosha Pan salt desert. Rent a car to drive through the park and wait at the water holes for the crowds of animals to arrive.

Take photos of the hundreds of impressive creatures that call this park home. Among the highlights are the many elephants and lions. Spot the springboks and gemsboks, which are like antelopes, galloping around the lakes.

Stay at one of the many camps spread across the immense grounds. They range from luxurious to budget and tend to consist of huts with excellent views. Some of the campgrounds have swimming pools and towers with lookout points. Make your way to the water hole near your camp to catch a glimpse of the animals stopping there for a drink. Visit these fascinating sites at night, when flood lights illuminate thirsty animals.

Embark on one of the camping trips organized by various tour operators. These include the Etosha Camping Safari, the 10-Day Namibia Camping Adventure and Etosha Photographic Safaris.

The park varies dramatically in scenery and terrain, depending on the season. In the dry period from May through October, much of the vegetation turns arid and dusty. Arrive in the wettest days of February to see the salt plain turn into a lagoon decorated with pink flamingos and pelicans.

The name of the park means Great White Place, in reference to the salt plain at its heart. Pay a daily fee to enter and get free entry for kids.

Etosha National Park covers a large portion of the northern part of Namibia. It is in the region of Kunene, near the areas of Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Oshana. Fly to the Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport and rent a car. Drive north for 280 miles (450 kilometers) to reach the southern boundary of the park in 4 to 5 hours.
