Dated but was clean and the staff was very friendly

The property was beautiful and the staff was very helpful and responsive. The location was also very close to fun shops and restaurants. My new first choice for stays in Birmingham

Clean, helpful staff, great stay.

We were the only people checking in during evening hours and the check in was long! The manager didn't communicate why or what the problem was, in fact he seemed distracted even after asking us if this was our first time there!(it was) Our King bed non-smoking room smelled of smoke and it appeared to be recently renovated, with dirt in various areas of the bathroom and even a large piece of metal on the floor. The linens were acceptable, the TV worked. The elevator looked like it had had a flood, dripping water and corrosion evident. The breakfast was the best part of the stay. Very good and varied. Impressive. Though the staff was busy and not particularly friendly. Perhaps not a good place to work? The hallway rug was either very old or very new, strange colors and patterns that never enhanced the hotel, in fact, made it look worse. I would think twice about staying here again although it was convenient to where we needed to be. One night was enough. It's an old historic hotel, just needs better management, communication, a friendlier staff and a big renovation! It was recommended to us by a trusted friend but I'm going to check with them to see when was the last time they stayed there ! Oh, and there's a charge to park that's separate from the hotel. They didn't tell us that. The valet staff made us pull past the front door and get out in the rain, the uncovered area....weird! No help with bags either.
