The location is okay, would recommend a car if staying in this area. They offer bike rental but we stayed here for three days and only saw one bike available. We had a nice view though. First things first, if you are taking the train, it is around a 20 minute walk from the station, but it mostly flat so it is easy. Staff were fantastic, and check in went great. The hotel was probably the best in Beppu back in the Showa Era (there is a second phone in the bathroom), however it is now clearly quite old and has a distinct smell, even inside my room. The carpet in the hallways was in rough shape, though the carpet in the room was clearly much newer. The air conditioner is either on or off, no control of the thermostat, so your choices are on, off, or open the windows. My room was on the 11th floor, so the view was exceptional.
