Anaeho'omalu Bay

Relax beneath the palm trees, enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving or surfing, and discover ancient Hawaiian sites at one of the most idyllic beaches on the island.

With good conditions for swimming, snorkeling, diving and surfing, a coastal walking trail to some important archaeological sites and stunning sunsets, it’s no wonder this stretch of coast draws in the crowds. Anaeho'omalu Bay is a one-stop destination for the best that Hawaii’s Big Island has to offer and is even sheltered from the trade winds.

Anaeho'omalu Bay, or “A-Bay," is a typical stretch of Hawaiian coast: its sand is white, its beach is lined with palm trees and its waves seem unending. Throw down your towel before diving into the surf or look around for a vendor to sell you a cool drink.

Head for the north end of the beach to find rental facilities and tour operators. Rent a surfboard, get surfing lessons, rent snorkel or dive gear, or book a trip on a charter boat to nearby dive sites. The snorkeling at Anaeho'omalu Bay is great for beginners, because it is protected from Hawaii’s trade winds. See tropical fish, sea turtles, incredible rock formations and, if you’re lucky, a pod of playful dolphins. Glass-bottomed boats offer a good alternative for those who want to remain dry but still see the reef.

Follow the trail that leads from the north end of the beach along the coast to find the two ancient Hawaiian fishponds that once served the local royalty. Named Kuualii and Kahapapa, the ponds are well sign posted, as are the tidal pools, turtle sanctuary and other ponds found on the trail.

Anaeho'omalu Bay is located on the west coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, just 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Kailua Kona. Free parking can be found in the allocated lot just south of Waikoloa Beach, and restrooms, showers and drinking water can be found at the north end of the beach. A-Bay is a public beach, but isn’t accessible at night. There are no lifeguards.
