Saskatchewan’s elegant capital features cultural, historical and political landmarks on a stunning lakeside setting.

First called “Pile O’ Bones” in honour of the buffalo skeletons which greeted the early settlers, Regina has grown into a stately, cultural city famed for its museums, galleries and beautiful man-made lake.

Start your day in the city’s natural heart, Wascana Centre. Before breakfast, join the active locals by taking a jog or stroll through the picturesque marshes and grasslands surrounding Wascana Lake.

While circling the lake, take your pick from the park’s many attractions. Bring the kids to the Saskatchewan Science Centre for an engaging and educational look at the inner workings of the natural world. Explore the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, which houses the biggest anthropological collection in the province. History buffs will appreciate the informative and interactive tours available at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building and Government House.

For lunch, sample a local favourite like “pitchfork fondue,” or watch for one of the excellent food trucks which dot the city. You can also select your own fresh ingredients from the farmers market on Saturdays and enjoy a picnic in the peaceful and aromatic Floral Conservatory.

Visit the MacKenzie Art Gallery or the Conexus Arts Centre to see works from Canada’s finest artists and craftspeople. In summer, play a round of golf at one of the city’s five courses or have a drink on one of the shady patios on Albert Street.

See the sunset ceremony held in summer by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy, catch a 3D movie at the IMAX theatre, or immerse yourself in the music of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Canada’s longest running ensemble. The centre of Regina is also filled with live music venues, billiards bars and nightclubs.

Regina’s compact size and multi-use lakeside paths make it a great city for exploring on foot or by bicycle. Use the efficient bus system to explore the prairies and forests beyond the city limits.

For a great daytrip, soak away your worries at the mineral spas in the city of Moose Jaw, 37 miles (60 kilometres) west of Regina.
