These hollow rock columns were formed when the lava wrapped around the cool tree trunks and quickly solidified. When the molten lava drained away, these rock columns were left standing. The columns are hollow because the tree trunks themselves were incinerated during the process, but only after the rock had cooled enough to hold it's shape. "Kelly was a wonderful host. Since she had cancellations while we were there (Jan 2026) she upgraded us to the master with ensuite. There are 3 bedrooms in total. Everything was spotlessly clean and there were all kinds of snacks and coffee, tea, milk available. Kelly made lovely breakfast for us each morning and was so accommodating. We really enjoyed our stay. It is about 30 minutes drive from Hilo. You do need a car. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending this B&B. "Jenny was very welcoming and we arrived in time for a brief tour of the home. The amenities met our needs in preparing for meals, the drive to the store is quite a ways away. So make sure you got your list and make your stops before heading into Fern Acres. It’s a beautiful place and an adventurous property. Amazing home! I would’ve never know the lifestyle in this style home, but it’s very beautifully set and modern.There’s lots of activities and games to do family time together. The back porch is perfect for outdoor sitting and watch the sunrise!!"

"Great location for exploring Volcano National Park. Private location close to the park and local restaurants. Appreciated some of the little things that were provided like umbrellas that we forgot to pack, and an iPad that we used to monitor the live stream of the volcano. Lucky enough to be there for 38\. We were at the park within 10 minutes of the start of the event. Highly recommend. "
