![When visiting Ghana, it’s almost imperative that you visit one of the former slave castles (Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, Osu Castle, and many others). It’s especially important for Black people across the diaspora to come and connect with their heritage. There is undoubtedly an underlying heaviness that exists due to the painful, dark history that lies there. 

Constructed in 1482 by the Portuguese, Elmina Castle once served as a trading post/settlement during the Atlantic Slave Trade. Men, women, and children were captured, tortured and confined to unsanitary and dangerous living quarters. Many of us know the history of the slave trade, but if you don’t please do some further research! 

Some people get very emotional when they visit, while others just observe in quiet reflection. As the tour guide leads you through the Castle, you will see the former male and female dungeons (which housed over 200 people at a time), a Portuguese church, castle yard, and an overlook . 

Today, tourism and fishing are helping to sustain Elmina. The castle is national landmark/monument and holds tours daily.

The food is always delicious - favorites include tilapia with banku and grilled lobster when they have it. breakfast is sumptuous and the fresh pineapple melts in you mouth. The staff is always friendly and helpful - many have been at the resort for years, and they never fail to remember our family. Beds are comfortable, and the rustic vibe is so relaxing.
