Whitehaven’s harbour has undergone major investment and development and is home to The Beacon Museum with interactive displays. You can tour The Rum Story attraction and find out all about the history of the Jefferson family from the original 1785 shop. The town also has an indoor public swimming pool, gym, sports centre, and golf 1½ miles away, if you’re felling energetic.
A trip to this part of the world would not be complete without visiting to St Bees Head and the long sandy beaches. St Bees is also the starting point of Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk and has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’ve come on holiday for walking, climbing and to explore the Lakeland Fells, you won’t be disappointed. A 5-mile drive and you’ll reach the Lake District National Park where you have an abundance of walks, cycle routes, wildlife, mountains, and lakes. Your nearest lake is Ennerdale Water, 6 miles away. Ennerdale is widely regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas of the Lake District and is teeming with wildlife including indigenous red squirrels, osprey, and buzzards. If that’s not enough, Loweswater, 13 miles way, which leads to Crummock Water and then Buttermere and are well worth a visit. The scenery around this unspoilt part of The Lakes is stunning and the panoramic views are a sight to behold. Whether you want an easy stroll, a challenging walk, or a serious climb, you’ve got a great base to start your adventures.
