The Neighborhood: The Faubourg Marigny, commonly just Marigny, is a hip neighborhood just "below" (down river from) the French Quarter. Best known for the great live music district on Frenchmen Street, the Marigny also offers neighborhood cafes & businesses, historic architecture, and more. It has the air of what the French Quarter was in it's golden days. It has a few small hotels, and many bed-and-breakfasts, as well as a number of good restaurants, coffee shops, and music venues. Architecturally, the Marigny is known for its many styles of Creole cottages, most of which date to the 19th century. Its "heart" is Washington Square Park (bounded by Frenchmen Street, Royal Street, Dauphine Street, and Elysian Fields Avenue). Frenchmen Street is the main nightlife district, with half a dozen live music clubs and just as many restaurants in four short blocks. At Mardi Gras, the Marigny is one of the city's hidden hot spots. Very popular with locals, who enjoy partying in the streets without the busy atmosphere of Bourbon Street. Crowds gather at the corner of Royal and Kerlerec (outside of R-Bar Inn) as well as at the intersection of Royal and Franklin. Elaborate costumes are the order of the day, along with brass bands and many drummers. Two weeks before Mardi Gras, the Marigny is also the starting place for the Krewe du Vieux, a satirical, raunchy parade in 19th-century Carnival style! Complete with small floats drawn by krewe members and mules. Local cafes, restaurants and music venues line Frenchmen Street. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, the Marigny is home to many artists and musicians, as well as a sizable gay and lesbian population. Among its notable residents are chef Paul Prudhomme, painter James Michalopoulas, and actors Harry Shearer and Jennifer Coolidge, who can be seen around town when they're not working in L.A. Local writers include New Orleans mystery writers, Julie Smith and J.M. Redmann, as well as Andrei Codrescu, Michael Swindle, and Kevin Allman. Frenchmen Street is in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood just below the lower edge of the Quarter. Rooms were very clean with extra towels, paper products, toiletries, and cleaning suplies. Plenty of comfortable beds. Kitchen stocked with plates, glasses, cookware etc. Location was wonderful. One block from a grocery store, Frenchmen street (music & restaurants) and the streetcar (get the Jazzy pass!!!). Short walk to Jackson Square, Decatur Street & Bourbon Street (all fabulous places for food, drink, entertainment, shopping etc.). As with any big city, there were rat citings periodically by the patio, but that shouldn't deter you from staying here. Communication with the owner was helpful and timely, they were always very responsive (before and during our stay). We even got to store our packed luggage in the home after check out until we left for our flight. All and all, this is a wonderful property! ##### Sally W. The location is close to bus stops for getting around. Near Frenchmen street, and places to eat. Even a Walgreens within a short walking distance. Well appointed, towels and bedding are plentiful and soft. The mattresses and pillows are heavenly. We loved the neighborhood and felt completely safe there. Loretta's pralines just down on the corner from the house had the best beignets in the city! The house is perfectly located to everything. The A/C kept us comfortable, the beds were comfortable, the house was super clean. The check in and out process was easy. The property manager was super responsive. The street for us was quiet. Some said it was loud, but we had no issues with noise. We had a very fun and pleasant experience. We are a married couple that traveled with our 17 year old daughter. There was plenty for her to do even close to the rental! Thank you for opening your home to us! If we ever are in the area again we will rebook! ##### Charity J. This is a great location far enough from Bourbon street to be quiet and close enough to walk. It’s very close to the jazz clubs on Frenchmen street. The ac kept us comfortable. Internet worked fine, the beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms had good water pressure. You are basically a block away from a small grocery store which was super handy. Lastly, the off street parking can’t be beat. We had a bronco sport rental and that fit. Longer cars would be fine, but a wider suv might be too tight. I’m not sure. But it was nice knowing parking wasn’t an issue as we drove around some days. Loved it. ##### Nathan B. It was a little difficult to get a good night's sleep as cars drove by, especially around 2-3am when the bars closed, with very loud, thumping bass. People walking by on the sidewalk talking sound like they are in the house with you. If I stayed here again I would bring a noise machine, perhaps noise canceling headphones, to help drown out some of the lesser sounds. ##### Sarah C.
