Visit the Municipal House Hall (Obecní dům), one of Prague’s finest examples of art nouveau architecture. It’s an extravagant palace with museum-like restaurants, salons and the city’s largest concert hall. The Municipal House Hall opened in 1912 as a focal point for official and social gatherings. It stands on the site of Prague’s former King’s Court, which was established by King Wenceslas IV in the late 1300s.
This architectural gem is an important centre for art and music, showcasing the outstanding talents of revered Czech artists, such as Alphonse Mucha and Max Švabinský. Admire the intricately designed entrance crowned by Karel Spillar’s half-domed mosaic, Homage to Prague. Flanking the mosaic are sculptures that symbolize the repression and rebirth of Czech nationals.
Step inside the building’s lobby to discover a wealth of art nouveau-style figurines and murals. The palace’s bar and restaurants double as museums of opulent décor.
